Creating Vibrancy and Community in Student Housing around THUAS

Geplaatst op 1 april 2026, 16:31 uur

The area around The Hague University houses many students, but it doesn’t really feel “lived in”. I’ve heard from people living there that the neighbourhood feels unsafe and unpleasant around their own house, and this is also visible just walking around. Students treat it as “just a space to pass through”, not a home to stay. I’m bringing residents together through research, co-creation workshops, and design to reimagine what this could be.

Starting with the Red Cross building at Leeghwaterplein, which currently lacks inviting communal spaces or ways for residents to connect. There I’m currently working with students to find out what would actually make them feel at home and excited about their neighbourhood. I'm leveraging my experience in user research and my passion for architecture to conduct interviews and collaborative workshops where we’ll create ideas together. From there I’ll make visual designs that show what’s possible: more vibrant communal spaces, better ways to connect with neighbours, working towards a neighbourhood that feels like a real campus community.

The immediate goal is to bring residents of the Red Cross building together and give them a voice in shaping their living environment. By involving them in research and workshops, we're building community and I’m showing them they have more agency and impact over their space than they think. The research and designs will show what's possible when the housing prioritizes the actual students and their connection over just providing rooms.

And longer term it’s also planting seeds for a ripple effect. By making the neighbourhood more inviting and getting young people excited about the area again, we create momentum that invites more initiatives and events. This research, workshops, and designs are a start in that. And step by step the area around the university will turn into a real campus that students are proud to study at and feel safe in. The city becomes our home by MAKING it our home, and that happens together.
